UNUSUAL PLANT VARIETIES SURFACE AFTER COLD WAR ENDS

Plant varieties unknown or inaccessible to the outside world during the Cold War are coming to light in eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Among them are intriguing plants such as black tomatoes and edible mountain ash and honeysuckle.

Adventurous U.S. gardeners are getting to grow and taste these exotic fruits and vegetables. Some plants are the product of modern breeders and others are heirlooms gathered in remote, mountainous places where traditional growing goes back centuries.
