SMOKE ALARM SOUNDS AFTER CHILD LIGHTS FIRE

A smoke alarm alerted the residents of a Blacksburg apartment to a fire Sunday afternoon set by a child.

According to a news release from Fire Chief Keith Bolte, the fire was discovered in apartment 731 at 44 New Kent Road after a smoke alarm was triggered.

Apparently, bedroom carpeting had been ignited by a 4-year-old playing with a lighter. No injuries were reported.

The apartment will need an estimated $3,000 in repairs for smoke damage, however.

The fire occurred at 1:16 p.m. Mike Patillo is listed as a resident; his wife and three small children also live there.
