MASKED MAN HOLDS UP SALEM MARKET AT GUNPOINT

A masked man held up the Dilly-Dally Mini-Market in south Salem at gunpoint Monday evening, police said.

The man entered the store at 1505 Eddy St., near the Roanoke River, about 7:15 p.m. He pulled out a handgun and told the clerk to give him cash, Salem Police Lt. D.F. Murphy said.

The woman working in the store handed over an undisclosed amount of money, and the robber fled, Murphy said.

Police searched the area on foot with the aid of a Roanoke County police dog, but the dog lost the scent after a short time.

Murphy said the robber probably had a car waiting for his escape.
