STATE POLICE MAY CLOSE ROAD UP POOR MOUNTAIN

State police now have the authorization to close a road on the north side of Poor Mountain to prevent vandalism to a police radio transmitting station.

The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors granted permission to gate the road last week. The move will restrict access to a state police repeater station and a county Sheriff's Office radio tower, off Brake Road above Elliston.

State police said vandals have used high-powered weapons to damage the transmitter. It's a situation with the potential to interrupt communications between troopers and dispatchers.

The board granted the closure on the condition that the county receive written consent from adjacent landowners. So far, the county has contacted all three of those out-of-town landowners and has received no opposition.
