OKLA. COACH TO SPEAK TO SPORTS CLUB

Howard Schnellenberger, appointed Oklahoma's head football coach in December, will be the guest speaker for the Roanoke Valley Sports Club's meeting Monday at the Salem Civic Center.

Schnellenberger, who guided his 1983 Miami team to the national championship, moved to the Sooners after revitalizing his hometown Louisville program over a decade. He is beginning his 16th year as a college head coach.

Advance dinner reservations are available for $10 to members and $15 to guests, with members paying $15 and guests $20 at the door. For reservations, contact Jody Moir (989-5927) or Dan Wooldridge (389-7373). The 6:15 p.m. dinner follows a social half-hour.

The club's speaker at its March meeting is scheduled to be ACC commissioner Gene Corrigan.

In other regional news:

No.1 seeded Roanoke will tip off the Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's basketball tournament against No.8 Lynchburg.

The Maroons (19-5 overall, 17-3 ODAC) and Hornets (8-16, 6-14) meet Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the Salem Civic Center. Roanoke has won the championship nine of the 12 times it has been played, including the past four years.

In other first-round games, No.4 Virginia Wesleyan (16-8, 13-7) faces No.5 Eastern Mennonite (12-11, 11-9) at 3:30, No.2 Randolph-Macon (19-5, 17-3) takes on No.7 Emory & Henry (12-12, 10-10) at 6:30, and No.6 Bridgewater (12-12, 11-9) plays No.3 Guilford (19-5, 15-5) at 8:30.

Semifinal games are Friday at 1 and 3 p.m., and the championship is Saturday at 2 p.m.

The Hampden-Sydney men's basketball team retained the No.1 ranking in the NCAA Division III South Region poll released Tuesday.

The Tigers (25-2) won their school-record 25th game Monday night 65-55 over Roanoke in the championship game of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament.

The Maroons (19-8), who had dropped out of the poll, reappeared at No.6 in place of Bridgewater, which was upset by Virginia Wesleyan in the ODAC's first round.

Millsaps (Miss.) was second in the poll, followed by Maryville (Tenn.), Hendrix (Ark.), Oglethorpe (Ga.), Roanoke, North Carolina Wesleyan and Christopher Newport.
