TAXI DRIVER BEATEN WITH HAMMER

A 34-year-old taxi driver was beaten and robbed by one of his fares early Tuesday in Northwest Roanoke, police said.

The victim was treated at Roanoke Memorial Hospital for head wounds.

The driver picked up the man in the 2400 block of Clifton Avenue Northwest, took him to Ferncliff Apartments at 3666 Ferncliff Ave. N.W., and then returned him to the Clifton Avenue area, according to police.

When the driver asked for his fare, the man hit him in the forehead with a claw hammer. The driver told police the man hit him repeatedly as the driver threw money at his attacker.

The assailant fled the cab.

No arrests have been made.
