FRANKLIN GOP CHAIRMAN SAYS HE'LL RESIGN

Staring a monster of an election year in the face, Franklin County Republican Chairman Tom Meredith decided he could not find the time to do his party justice. He announced this week that he is resigning.

To say Franklin County will have a full ballot is an understatement. Up for election this November will be the five county constitutional officers, all three of the county's state representatives and every member of the Board of Supervisors and School Board (15 people).

Meredith, who is president of his own consulting company and also works as director of government operations for a company that manufactures fire extinguishers, said his workload with those two jobs has increased and "I just had to back off somewhere."

Meredith was elected to a two-year term as GOP chairman last year.

A new chairman will be elected at a mass meeting scheduled for March 14 at the county courthouse, Meredith said.

Carthan Currin, who preceded Meredith as chairman, said Wednesday that he's interested in seeking a second term.

Currin is general manager of the Comfort Inn in Rocky Mount.
