Jane Bassett Spilman, Hollins trustee chairwoman, said $1 million was given to the library fund by an anonymous alumna.
The remaining gifts included an anonymous donation in memory of Mary Phlegar Smith, dean of the college from 1939-64, and donations from family and friends in memory of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Mary Wells Ashworth, the first recipient of the Hollins Medal in 1967.
The library is expected to cost about $11 million. Construction is to begin within the year. The college has raised $3.8 million for the project.
Spilman also announced the endowment of a professorship in liberal arts funded by a bequest from Richard and Marion (Tommy) Koonce Berry of Birmingham, Ala. Marion Berry is a 1925 Hollins graduate.
The endowment will provide money for salary, research and professional development for a distinguished professor at the college.
