Howard died Sunday while at home with Eva, his wife of 40 years, according to a son, Dale.
A founding member of the Screen Actors Guild, Howard served as a Navy officer during World War II and received the Navy Cross.
In the 1950s he starred in several television series, most notably as Dr. Hudson in ``Dr. Hudson's Secret Journal.''
Howard, who initially planned to become a teacher, was spotted by a talent scout and went on to make dozens of films during the 1930s and 1940s.
He played the title role in the ``Bulldog Drummond'' series, but probably is best remembered as Colman's quick-tempered brother in Frank Capra's 1937 ``Lost Horizon.''
In that role, he talks a young woman into leaving the utopia of Shangri-La with him. The ravages of old age have been held at bay in the mountain paradise, and as soon as she leaves, the woman ages and dies. Howard then jumps to his death off a cliff.
In 1940's ``The Philadelphia Story'' he played the fiance whom Hepburn's character eventually rejects in favor of her first husband, portrayed by Cary Grant.
His lesser films included ``Touchdown Army,'' ``Soak the Rich'' and ``Radar Secret Service.''
