STAUNTON RIVERS FALLS IN OVERTIME

Dennis Brown's jump shot in the lane with one second remaining in overtime gave Altavista a 62-60 victory over Staunton River in a first-round game of the Seminole District Tournament in boys' basketball on Wednesday night.

Brown's basket followed a Staunton River turnover with seven seconds remaining.

Altavista (15-6) will play Liberty in a semifinal at 7 p.m. Friday at Liberty University. Friday's other semifinal will pit Brookville, a 64-50 winner over William Campbell on Wednesday, against Appomattox County.

Staunton River finished at 14-7 despite 27 points from Hunter Hoggatt and 17 from Cornelius Foxx.

Staunton River trailed 29-24 at halftime before outscoring Altavista 16-8 in the third quarter to take a 40-37 advantage. Altavista forced the extra session by winning the fourth quarter 17-14.

Brown finished with 22 to lead Altavista. Lee Shirlen added 18 and Dexter Woodruff 14 for the winners.
