NAVY SEAMAN RECRUIT ERIC G. SURFACE, son of Glenn and Linda Surface of Salem, recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill.

Surface is a 1994 graduate of Salem High School.

MARINE PFC. ROBERT E. WILLIAMS, son of Millard and Margaret Williams of Roanoke, recently completed recruit training and was promoted to his present rank.

Williams is a 1993 graduate of Cave Spring High School.

PFC. BRIAN S. BELL, son of Jerry and Linda Bell of New Castle, recently completed recruit training and was promoted to his present rank.

He is a 1994 graduate of Craig County High School.

NAVY AIRMAN APPRENTICE MATTHEW B. MITCHELL, son of Lorraine C. Roberts of Salem, recently returned from a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Indian Ocean with the amphibious assault ship USS Guam.

MARINE PVT. JOHN H. HENDRICKS, son of Melvin and Betty Rock of Roanoke, recently completed recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. He is a 1993 graduate of Northside High School.

PFC. DAVID J. BOLT, son of John W. and Joann L. Bolt of 2341 Brookfield Drive, Roanoke, recently completed recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

He is a 1994 graduate of Cave Spring High School.

SGT. EDWARD W. WELLS, son of Gala P. Laxton of Roanoke and Edward W. Wells Sr. of Vinton, recently returned from Haiti, where he participated in humanitarian missions such as distributing food and resupplying hospitals with Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force Caribbean.

Wells is a 1987 graduate of Salem High School.

PVT. DAVID P. REECE, Roanoke, has completed basic training at Fort Knox, Ky.

Reece is the son of Paul and Rebecca Reece of Boones Mill. He is a 1994 graduate of Cave Spring High School.

PVT. GLENN A. SCOTT JR. has completed basic training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C.

Scott, a 1994 graduate of Cave Spring High School, is the son of Kim Scott and Glenn A. Scott, both of Roanoke.

THE VIRGINIA ARMY NATIONAL GUARD has awarded the Army Achievement Medal to a Roanoke resident and announced the promotions of three others.

Sgt. First Class Theodore Yates received the medal for outstanding performance and service; and Kevin M. Campbell, Stephen L. Lee and Russell Lowry were promoted to the rank of sergeant.

THE FOOD SERVICE SECTION of the Virginia National Guard's Headquarters Company, First Battalion, 116th Infantry has received the Philip A. Connelly Award for excellence in food preparation.

Sgt. First Class Larry Woods led crew that includes Sgts. Dennis Ayers, Gregory Mason, James Patterson and Jimmy Phillips, Specialist Michael Embry, Privates First Class Johnny Browing and Mark Saunders, and Private Peter Fenerty.

The team received a gold trophy, and individuals received silver medallions in the annual competition by food service units throughout the Army.

AIRMAN APPRENTICE CHRISTOPHER M. BRADLEY, son of Tommy C. and Patricia S. Bradley of Roanoke, recently completed Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

He is a 1993 graduate of Northside High School.

SEAMAN RECRUIT JEFFREY D. WIMMER, son of Justin D. and Debbie M. Wimmer of Roanoke, recently completed Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

He is a 1994 graduate of William Fleming High School.

CPL. TREVOR S. DEMPSEY, son of Richard S. and Norma B. Dempsey of Craig Robertson Road, recently received a certificate of commendation.

Dempsey was cited for superior performance of duty while assigned with Weapons Training Battalion at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Camp Pendleton, Calif.

He is a 1991 graduate of Patrick Henry High School.

LANCE CPL. JAMES A. HALL, son of Robert J. and Frances L. Hall of Salem, recently was promoted to his present rank while serving in the Marine Corps Detachment, Defense Language Institute in Presidio of Monterey, Calif.

He is a 1992 graduate of William Fleming High School.

BRANT GLENN TURNER, son of Glenn and Twila Turner of Salem, recently completed Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Orlando, Fla.

He is a 1994 graduate of Salem High School.
