We'd probably allow it there, and maybe a few other places. Most of us want to restrict smoking in public places.

Who wants to restrict smoking to designated areas?

Seniors are the only age group where a majority doesn't think smoking should be restricted. But that's because a lot of them think it should be banned altogether.

AGE UNRESTRICTED DESIGNATED AREAS ONLY BANNED

18-29: 7% 60% 33%

50-64: 10% 53% 34%

65 and up: 8% 48% 41%

Those who have been to college are the most interested in banning smoking in public places.

EDUCATION

Income seems to be a key factor in shaping views on smoking in public. Enthusiasm for banning smoking rises sharply among those making more than $30,000.

INCOME

Blacks are more likely than whites to believe smoking should be restricted, but whites are more likely to think it should be banned.

RACE

Men are more inclined than women to restrict smoking, but women are more likely to want to prohibit it.

GENDER

Ifs, ands, and butts...

There are some places where most of us think smoking should be outlawed altogether. Tomorrow, we'll look at one of those places.
