BLACK MARROW DONORS TO BE SIGNED UP SUNDAY

With the help of the Marrow Donor Center of the Red Cross, the black community will register potential marrow donors Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Harrison Museum of African American Culture.

To be placed on the potential donor list, you must be between 18 and 55 and in good health and have a blood sample taken, Dr. Pink Wimbish said.

Marrow is used in the treatment of leukemia, which causes white blood cells to multiply rapidly and destroy red blood cells.

Wimbush, a Roanoke podiatrist, is leading the local part of a national campaign funded by the federal government to increase the number of black people on the list. They currently are only 2 percent of those registered nationally.

More information can be obtained from Wimbish at 982-0253 or from the Marrow Donor Center of the Virginias at 985-3512.
