BULLDOGS BITE DOWN ON BASSETT

BASSETT - Martinsville High built a 13-point halftime lead and held off Bassett 69-60 Thursday night in a Piedmont District tournament semifinal.

The Bulldogs will play the winner of tonight's semifinal between Laurel Park and Fieldale-Collinsville in the championship 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Bassett.

Mike Martin scored 25 points and Manti Venable added 22 for Martinsville, which is looking to send coach Husky Hall out with another state title in his final season.

Tyree Hairston scored 17 points and Chris Hairston added 10 for the Bengals, who cut their deficit to six points but could not get any closer in the fourth quarter.

VIC Tournament

Fishburne Military 71, Roanoke Catholic 58: In Lynchburg, the Celtics were in trouble from the start, falling behind by 16 points in the first quarter, and never recovered in a quarterfinal at Lynchburg College.

Ryan Blosser scored 25 points to lead Fishburne, which advances to meet Eastern Mennonite in a semifinal. Matt Williams added 16 points, and Fishburne hit 14 of 17 free-throw attempts to Roanoke Catholic's 0-for-4 shooting.

Tony Joyce scored 19 points to lead the Celtics, who finish their season with a 9-16 record, P.L. Bratton added 18 points and 15 rebounds.

Eastern Mennonite 72, North Cross 43: Ryan Yoder scored 15 points as the Flames ripped the Raiders in a quarterfinal.

Eastern Mennonite (12-12) will play Fishburne Military in today's semifinal at 6:30 p.m.

Ryan Strite and Doug Blyer each added 10 for the Flames.

North Cross, which finishes 11-11, was led by Hal Johnson's 17 points.

Carlisle 87, Hargrave Military 65: Rod Mitchell poured in 20 points to lead the Chiefs over the Tigers in a quarterfinal game.

Carlisle (20-2) will play Miller School in today's 8 p.m. semifinal.

The Chiefs started the game with a 13-0 run and led 21-4 before Hargrave began to battle back. The Tigers pulled to 12 points in the third quarter, but Mitchell made back-to-back 3-pointers to keep Carlisle on top.

Bryant Redd added 19 for the Chiefs, and Joseph McClinton scored 18.
