AAUW book sale

BLACKSBURG - The Blacksburg-area branch of the American Association of University Women will be collecting used books during March to be sold for scholarships.

Collection boxes will be at local grocery stores, including Wades and Kroger. Unsold books will be donated to organizations that promote literacy.

Mental-health awards

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Mental Health Association of the New River Valley is now accepting nominations for the following awards:

The Roswell E. Round Award, for ongoing volunteerism or service.

The Gunnar Teilmann Award, for a member of the clergy dedicated to serving the needs of other people.

The Mattie Lou Smusz Award, for volunteer service to people with mental illness.

The Distinguished Service Award, for a person or group who has performed an outstanding service.

The Mental Health Professional Award, for a professional in the mental health field.

The Media Award, for a media representative who has made an outstanding contribution in the coverage of mental health issues.

The Charles H. Johnson Award, which recognizes a member of the association who has demonstrated a dedication toward treating mental illnesses.

Deadline for nominations is April 7. The winners will be recognized at a luncheon in May.

Park reservations

RICHMOND - Cabins and campgrounds in Virginia's state parks will open March 1 and will feature improved cabins and a new reservation policy.

The minimum cabin stay has been has been reduced from a week to two days, making it easier to get away for a weekend. Reservations for a two-day cabin stay can be made no more than a month ahead of time. Week-long reservations can be made now for the rest of the year.

Air conditioning and heating have been added to many cabins, and exterior and interior siding have been installed.

Visitors who want to stay at a campground for a longer time may want to consider being a campground host. The camping season ends Dec. 4.

At Clinch Valley

WISE - Two Virginia Tech professors will spend Thursday at Clinch Valley College hosting programs which celebrate Women's History Month.

Ann Kilkelly, Tech's associate professor of theater arts and women's studies director, and Carol Burch-Brown, a professor in Tech's art and humanities department, will discuss ``Interdisciplinary Pedagogy within the Context of Race, Class and Gender'' at a 4 p.m. lecture.

At 7:30 p.m., they will perform a dance routine titled ``Life Stories and Voices: Feminism and the Performing Arts.'' Both presentations are open to the public.

Kilkelly has published choral compositions in ``Sistra'' and ``Earthsongs.''

Her ``Grandma's Alleluia'' and ``The Muse, the Stove and the Willow Plate'' were premiered at Harvard by the Wellesley Women's Chorale, and each has won prizes in national choral composition contests.

Kilkelly has performed at The Road Company of Johnson City, Tenn., the Lexington Opera House, the University of Kentucky Women Writer's Conference and at other colleges and universities.
