DECEASED ASTRONAUT'S BROTHER TO VISIT

The brother of Roland McNair, an astronaut who was killed in the 1986 explosion of the Challenger space shuttle, will visit Virginia Highlands Community College on Monday and Tuesday.

Carl McNair will be speaking informally on his brother's life and on cultural diversity. He is president and co-founder of the Ronald E. McNair Foundation, which was set up to encourage young people to pursue careers in science, mathematics and technology.

He will speak at a 6 p.m. reception Monday in the college auditorium. The reception is open to the public. He also will speak at a luncheon Tuesday.

He will discuss how his brother earned a doctorate in physics at age 26, how he was one of 35 applicants from a pool of 11,000 accepted for astronaut training, and his being the second black to orbit Earth.
