UVA WOMEN SEEK ACC'S 1ST PERFECT RECORD

Sixteen games, 16 victories.

It's a league record no men's or women's basketball team in the ACC has posted.

But if No.6 Virginia can defeat a struggling Maryland team Sunday, the Cavaliers will have completed an undefeated march through one of the nation's top conferences.

Making ACC hoops history is no big deal, junior Wendy Palmer said, who leads Virginia with averages of 18.1 points and 9.6 rebounds.

``Honestly, I don't think about it at all,'' Palmer said. ``It's just something small compared to what we want to accomplish this season. We've got a long way to go. We'll get our time to celebrate later.''

Junior center Jeffra Gausepohl agreed.

``We have to look at it as just another game,'' said Gausepohl, the Cavaliers' second-leading scorer. ``If we make it out to be more than it is, it will be more extra pressure than we need. Granted, it would be really cool to be undefeated, but what really matters is the ACC tournament and after.''

With a victory, the Cavaliers (22-3) would become the first team to go 16-0 in the ACC since Florida State joined the conference in 1991 - and just the fourth undefeated women's team since the ACC was founded in 1978.

North Carolina State was 9-0 in the 1977-78 and 1979-80 seasons, before each the double round-robin was implemented. Virginia went 14-0 during the 1990-91 season.
