EAGLES SOARING IN NORTHWEST REGION

Franklin County took a 15-point lead over its nearest competition in the first session of the Northwest Region wrestling tournament at Rocky Mount on Friday.

The Eagles amassed 81 points in the 19-team meet. Halifax County is a distant second at 66 and Stonewall Jackson is third at 62.

Pulaski County finished with 43.5 points and is 10th going into today's final session. William Fleming is 14th with 34.5 points and Cave Spring is 16th with 25 points. G.W.-Danville is 17th with 19 points and Patrick Henry is in last place with three.

At Carroll County, Grundy took a 151/2-point lead over second-place Marion in the Region IV wrestling tournament.

The Golden Wave scored 113 points while the Scarlet Hurricane finished the first day of competition with 98 points.

In Timesland action, Christiansburg finished seventh with 54 points, Blacksburg was eighth with 48 points and Carroll County finished ninth with 41 points.

The biggest upset of the night came in the 145-pound class, when Andy Hrovatic of Tazewell defeated Michael Garcia of Lee.

Nine Timesland wrestlers advanced to the championship quarterfinal round. John Derrossett (103) and Jamie Harris (112) of Christiansburg advanced, as did fellow Demons Eric Schmucker (152) and Darren Slusher (160). Three Blacksburg wrestlers, John Ohm (140), Kip Kenyon (189), and Nathan Cumbee (275), also advanced as did Carroll County's Justin Bernard (135) and Glenn Enrico (145).
