FERRUM MEN BOW OUT OF TOURNAMENT

Kevin Beard scored a team-high 27 points as the Hornets knocked off top-seeded Ferrum 106-96 in a semifinal of the Dixie Conference tournament in Fayetteville, N.C.

Ferrum (12-13), which trailed by 10 at halftime, went on a 20-2 run to start the second half and take a 62-54 lead. Greensboro answered with an 8-0 run to tie the score and then pulled away by taking advantage of a huge disparity at the free-throw line. The Hornets (17-9) made 33 of 53 free-throw attempts while Ferrum hit 10 of 18.

The Hornets , who shot 46 percent from the field, were helped by the19 points from Corrie McClary and 17 from Toby Lancaster.

The regular-season champion Panthers were plagued by poor field-goal shooting, making only 36 percent of their shots from the field and hitting just 16-of-44 3-point attempts. John Breedlove led Ferrum with 30 points. Marcus Toney added 28 points for Ferrum.

Breedlove, who was named first-team All-Dixie Conference, passed Quincy Quick on Ferrum's all-time scoring list and finished his career with 1,194 points to rank second behind All-American Everett Foxx, who scored over 2,000 points.

CIAA Tournament

In Winston-Salem, N.C.

Norfolk State 79, Virginia State 56: Corey Williams' 18 points led four Norfolk State players in double figures as the Spartans cruised to a victory over Virginia State (16-13) in a CIAA tournament semifinal.

Blitz Wooten had 16 points and eight rebounds for Norfolk State (24-4), which moved into tonight's championship game against Virginia Union.

Virginia Union 83, Winston-Salem State 68: Ben Wallace had 33 points and 18 rebounds to lead top-seeded Virginia Union to an 83-68 victory over Winston-Salem State (10-19).

Women

Ferrum 74, N.C. Wesleyan 67: In Fayetteville, N.C., Kia Williams scored a game-high 27 points, including two free throws down the stretch to lift the Panthers past the Bishops (18-8) in a semifinal game of the Dixie Conference tournament and into today's championship against Methodist.

Ferrum (17-8), which has beaten Methodist twice this season, lost to Monarchs in the 1992 championship game. Methodist will play in its fourth straight championship game.

The score was tied at 67 with one minute, 59 seconds left, when freshman Aimee Barker, who scored 20 points, hit a 3-pointer to give Ferrum a 70-67 lead. The Panthers then hit four free throws down the stretch, including two by Williams, to finish a 7-0 run to end the game.

Williams made 12-of-17 shots from the floor as the Panthers shot 44 percent for the game and held the Bishops (18-8) to 37 percent field-goal shooting. Tamiko Martin, had nine points, 15 rebounds, and five blocks.

The Bishops (18-8), who had beaten Ferrum seven straight times, were led by Kathy Hackenson, who scored 22 points. Emily Sysson added 18.

Thursday's games

No. 2 UCLA 104, California 88: In Berkeley, Calif., Ed O'Bannon tied a school record with seven 3-point baskets during a 27-point performance and UCLA stopped its stumbling against California.

George Zidek added a career-high 25 points and Tyus Edney had 14 for the Bruins, who won their eighth straight since a 100-93 loss to Cal at Pauley Pavilion on Jan.28. Edney also had 11 assists.

UCLA (20-2, 13-2 Pac-10) shot a season-best 66.7 percent from the floor to keep Cal (12-10, 4-9 Pac-10) winless in six conference games at home.

O'Bannon made nine of his 13 shots from the field, including seven of nine from 3-point range to tie Reggie Miller's school mark, set in 1986.

Monty Buckley led Cal with 19 points and K.J Roberts added 18 points off the bench.

CARRIL GETS 500TH WIN: Princeton coach Pete Carril got his 500th career victory with a 64-54 win over Cornell. Carril, 64, has a 500-265 record in 29 seasons, all but one of them at Princeton. He is the 16th active coach and 40th overall to join the 500-win club.
