MARIJUANA FOUND IN CAR

A Florida man traveling to Pennsylvania picked up more than he bargained for after using a radar detector on Interstate 81 Thursday night.

Ronald Rose of Green Acres, Fla., was pulled over by Virginia State Trooper Malcolm Austin on 81 just north of the Troutville exit.

According to Sgt. Joe Rader, Austin initially pulled Rose over to cite him for the radar detector. After talking with Rose, however, Austin asked to search the car and found eight pounds of marijuana under the seat. The drug had an estimated street value of about $16,000.

Rader said Austin did a good job trusting his instincts and remembering police training.

"It's one of those times the training really pays off," Austin said.

Rose was charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana.
