FRANKLIN CO. BACK ON TOP IN WRESTLING

Franklin County turned the Northwestern Region wrestling championships into a homecoming party Saturday night.

Led by three individual champions - Trung Nguyen (103 pounds), Bryan Jones (140) and Landen Cuff (189) - the Eagles crushed second-place finisher Gar-Field 179-121.

Franklin County was so dominant it had clinched its first regional title since 1992 before the consolation and championship rounds.

It was Franklin County's first regional championship since 1992.

``I'm very pleased,'' said Kris Kahila, the Eagles' coach. ``I didn't want to talk about this earlier, but we had seven of our 13 guys hurting this week. Two were sick and five were banged up. I was very concerned.''

Halifax County edged Stonewall Jackson 118-114 for third place. Potomac (110.5) finished fifth.

Other than Franklin County, the Roanoke Valley District teams did not fare well. Pulaski County (11th), William Fleming (12th), Cave Spring (15th) and Patrick Henry (19th) placed in the second division of the 19-team field.

The strongest district was the Cardinal, which had all four of its representatives (Gar-Field, Potomac, Osbourn Park and C.D. Hylton) finish in the top 10.

Franklin County's John Muse (second at 152 pounds), Eric Ingram (second at 275) and Ivan Trotter (third at 130) were major contributors to the victory.

The only school to claim multiple championships other than Franklin County was Stonewall Jackson, with Todd Mason (119 pounds) and Mike Pereira (125).

Mason pinned North Stafford's Justin Baker in 3:48 in the 119 final, and Pereira, who finished third in the state last year, recorded the fastest pin of the championship, 1:01 against Brooke Point's Jeremy Alexander.

``We shuffled [Mason and Pereira] around all year long in dual matches, because they're worth 12 team points [two pins] against just about anybody around here,'' said Bill Cameron, Stonewall Jackson's coach. ``That's why our record was 16-4.''

Pulaski County's J.R. Osborne, a sophomore, took the 171-pound title.

``I have to give a lot of credit to my older brothers,'' said Osborne who, apparently exhausted, stayed prone on the mat for several minutes after his victory.

The other winners were Potomac's Ken Cole (112 pounds), C.D. Hylton's Benji Main (130), Woodbridge's Damon Stewart (135), North Stafford's Chad Barbee (145), Gar-Field's David Hardin (152), E.C. Glass' Breon Crennel (160) and Halifax County's Matt Scott (275).

Other area wrestlers who placed were William Fleming's Herbie Kasey (second at 135 pounds) and Shannon Wilson (second at 140); and Cave Spring's Scott Salliss (third at 119) and Tim Carter (fourth at 171).

Kasey entered his championship match undefeated but fell 4-2 to Woodbridge's Stewart, who placed fifth in the state a year ago.

``Yeah, and Herbert was fourth in the state last year in a different weight class. He should have won,'' said George ''Killer'' Miller, Fleming's coach.
