GLENVAR CLAIMS TITLE IN PIONEER

Glenvar used an 11-3 run to open the fourth quarter and held off Parry McCluer 58-54 in the championship game of the Pioneer District Tournament on Saturday in Clifton Forge.

Both teams advance to the Region C Tournament. Glenvar (16-7) was led by quartet of players who each scored 11 points.

Josh Williamson scored six of his 11 in the fourth quarter, and James Williams added five of his 11 in the fourth period as the Highlanders opened a seven-point lead and Parry McCluer never recovered. Nick Varney and Corey Willis each added 11 for Glenvar.

The Fighting Blues (17-7) were led by Mike McElroy, who scored a game-high 21 points, including four 3-pointers. Brandon Garrett added 17 points, and Carl Sanderson chipped in 11.

Varney, Williams, McElroy, Sanderson and Covington's Dusty Roman were named to the all-tournament team.

Piedmont

Laurel Park 77, Martinsville 64: The Lancers rallied from a five-point halftime deficit to knock off the top-seeded Bulldogs in the championship game at Bassett High School in Bassett.

The Lancers, seeded second, fell behind 33-28 as they gave up numerous transition baskets in the first two quarters.

Laurel Park (18-5) made some defensive adjustments at halftime and hit the boards with a vengeance in the second half to earn a berth in the Region III Tournament. The Bulldogs (18-5) also advance to regional play as the regular-season champion.

Five players scored in double figures for the Lancers, led by Darrell Wilson with 17 points. Girard Foster had 15, Ronta Davis 12 and Warrick Scott and Rashad Wall 11 each.

Mike Martin scored a game-high 26 points for Martinsville.

ODACS

Gateway 56, Mount Carmel 51: In Richmond, Jay Perfater scored 11 of his 13 points in the fourth quarter, including a couple of key free throws, to lift the Crusaders over Mount Carmel to win the Old Dominion Association of Christian Schools title.

Gateway (13-5) trailed by 12 in the third quarter, before Allen Surface, who finished with 13 points, scored eight to rally the Crusaders.

Ryan Gordon led Gateway with a game-high 19 points.

Mount Carmel (18-4) was led by Kevin Good, who scored 16 points. Chris Stoneberger added 15, including four 3-pointers.

VIC

Carlisle 59, Eastern Mennonite 47: In Lynchburg, Rod Mitchell hit two 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to give the Chiefs (22-2) a six-point lead, and they went on to the Virginia Independent Conference championship.

Carlisle (22-2) led by one late in the fourth quarter before Mitchell, who scored 14 points, hit consecutive 3-pointers to give the Chiefs the lead.

Ryan Smith hit five consecutive free throws in the last three minutes to ice the game for Carlisle. Lamont Franklin, Bryant Redd and Joseph McClinton added 11 each for the Chiefs.

Eastern Mennonite was led by Doug Blyer, who scored a game-high 20 points.
