`SERPENT' WINNER FOR PCHS PLAYERS|

The PULASKI COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL PLAYERS slithered past competitors at the Regional Virginia High School League Theatre Festival on Feb. 18 at Stafford High School with their production of Jean-Claude VanItallie's ``The Serpent.'' The troupe will advance to state-level competition for the sixth consecutive year.

The three judges also gave the entire cast the best actor award. Director Rhonda Welsh earned a perfect score of 30 for her direction of the piece.

``I am amazed with these students and with the fact that they were all given first place in the acting awards,'' Welsh said.

After a week of working on acting exercises and training to take a break from the script, the students hit the stage again this week to prepare for the next level of competition.

They travel to Charlottesville on Monday to compete at the state theater championships.

Brent Slaughter, Marty Swann, Jeff Nash and Mukund Patel of the Virginia Tech Materials Science and Engineering Department brought their SCIENCE ON WHEELS demonstration to the multipurpose room of Belview Elementary School on Feb. 14.

Fifth-graders visited the four hands-on learning centers and observed experiments using electricity, acids and bases, liquid nitrogen, and light.

``I liked each center a lot; they were cool, especially the one on liquid nitrogen. It froze marshmallows, and when we ate one, smoke came out from our noses,'' said fifth-grader Timmy Bishop.

STUDENT ORGANIZERS FOR THE SCHOOL, a newly organized group of fifth-graders at Prices Fork Elementary, will have a busy spring. The pupils, selected by teachers to encourage leadership potential through school and community projects, plan to organize a math-a-thon to raise money for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital and a school campus cleanup.

The group has already organized the school's collections for the Montgomery County Christmas Store, adopted grandparents at a nursing home and organized a reading pals program with first-graders.

Members of the group are Nathan Alls, Adam Eagle, Erica Fillmore, Heather Harris, Luke Harris, Adam Linkous, Jamin Martin, Luke McCoy, Brandon Roop, Clarissa Shepherd and Tiffany Sherman.

The New River Valley Friends of the Roanoke Symphony and the Hampton Corporation will sponsor a performance of the ROANOKE YOUTH SYMPHONY and the ROANOKE JUNIOR STRINGS, Sunday, 3 p.m., in Preston Auditorium, Radford University.

Admission is free. First- through 12th-grade students may register before the performance to win a $100 music scholarship. For more information, call 382-4769 or 552-6053.

Christiansburg Elementary School fifth-grade musicians have formed a new performance group, the CES ORFF ENSEMBLE, directed by Cheryl St. John, the school's music teacher, and Marilyn Meador, associate professor of music at Radford University.

In addition to singing and making music, group members compose original pieces and study the artistic expressions of specific cultural groups and historical periods.

The ensemble presented its first program at the school Monday, featuring African music in honor of Black History Month. The performers were joined by members of the African Music Ensemble from Radford University.

The Blacksburg area elementary school parent-teacher associations will sponsor a ``Back to the Beach'' FAMILY DANCE Friday, 7:30-9:30 p.m., at the Blacksburg Recreation Center.

The event will feature disc jockey Earl Brown with line dancing, the limbo, the cakewalk and other group activities.

Admission to the dance is one non-perishable food item per person for the Inter-Faith Food Pantry. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Virginia Tech's Jack Finney, associate professor of psychology, and Dody Lilly, a graduate student in clinical psychology, seek 8- to 12-year-olds with ASTHMA to volunteer in a study aimed to help understand the health and social factors that contribute to children's asthma symptoms.

Volunteers will answer questions on how they manage the disorder in a one-hour interview with a researcher either at home or at the Psychological Services Center. Participation is confidential.

For further information or to schedule an interview, call 231-7709 or 951-1085.

Radford City Schools will hold their annual KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION Thursday, 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m., in the library of McHarg Elementary School. Children turning 5 on or before Sept. 30 are eligible to register.
