U.S., VIRGINIA COAL OUTPUT INCREASES

Domestic coal production totaled 21 million tons during the week ending Feb. 18, up 3 percent from the 20.4 million tons produced the previous week, the U.S. Department of Energy reported Monday.

The U.S. coal industry produced 20.4 million tons in the same week last year, according to the department's Energy Information Administration. Virginia mines produced 892,000 tons of coal during the week, up from 807,000 tons a week earlier and 779,000 tons in the same week a year earlier.

Domestic coal production so far this year is 146 million tons, 11 percent ahead of last year's production.

The week's estimated production accounts for bituminous and lignite coal.
