So said most of the audience at a mock trial, siding with the argument that Elvis Preslet still walks, breathes, sings and swivels his hips on a remote island somewhere as he hides from mobsters who want to kill him.
The 2 1/2-hour trial, held as fund-raiser for the law review publication at Monterey College of Law in Monterey, Calif., drew 200 people who alternately giggled, gasped and ultimately answered yes to the question, "Is Elvis alive?"
The official line is that Presley died of cardiac arrhythmia in a bathroom of his Graceland mansion in Memphis, Tenn., on Aug. 16, 1977.
But Phil Aitcheson, chairman of the Presley Commission, which raises money for multiple sclerosis research, argued that the King wqent into hiding after testifying against mobsters who bilked him out of millions of dollars.
But Law student Paul Sanford told him to get a life - and not Elvis'.
"Mickey Mantle is retired, John Wayne is dead," he said. "Kentucky Fried Chicken is no longer fired. And yes, Elvis Presley, the King, is dead. Long live the king."
