COMMUNITY COLLEGE PLANS SENIOR SHORT-STORY CONTEST

New River Community College has announced a SHORT STORY CONTEST FOR SENIORS age 60 and older. Participants may enter up to two original, never-before-published short stories by the March 30 entry deadline.

Eight winners will be chosen from among stories submitted by seniors living within the college's service area - the counties of Montgomery, Pulaski, Giles and Floyd and the city of Radford. Winners will receive a plaque and a booklet of all the short stories submitted during a May 5 awards reception on the college's Dublin campus.

Submittals should be hand-printed or typewritten, double-spaced, and use only one side of the page. The author's name and address should be on each entry. For complete rules, call 674-3600, ext. 292. Three training days for participants in the NEW RIVER VALLEY SENIOR OLYMPICS are set for later this month and early April. The first is March 28, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. (and possibly later), at the Blacksburg Community Center and Blacksburg Municipal Park, Patrick Henry Drive. Sessions are free, but registration is required. SENIOR GATHERINGS

Giles chapter 445, American Association of Retired Persons, meets Friday, 12:30 p.m. Tim Brown of the Public Service Authority speaks.

Highland chapter 53, American Association of Retired Persons, meets Tuesday, 11:30 a.m., at the Cambria Baptist Church fellowship hall. Christiansburg Police Chief Ron Lemons, AARP State Special Service Officer Don Webb and others speak on the TRIAD crime prevention partnership. A potluck dinner starts at noon. Registration ends March 17 for Elderhostel, a chance for seniors to take special interest courses at Radford University. Elderhostel begins March 19 at the Best Western Radford Inn, Tyler Avenue. First-session programs include "Words That Changed Our World," "Who Are We? Where Do We Come From? Where Are We Going" and "Humor Your Way to Health." 831-5845.

The Program Committee meets Monday, 10-11 a.m. All are welcome to discuss senior programs.

Tuesday, 1-3 p.m., Angie Gunther of the Virginia Department of Health conducts a free program on early detection of breast and cervical cancer, aimed at women over 50.

March 10, 11 a.m., travel to Valley View Mall. Transportation is free, and lunch is on your own. Sign up by March 8. Space is limited.

CHRISTIANSBURG SENIOR CENTER, 655 Montgomery St. Sherry Kostric, 382-8173:

Registration ends today for the breakfast trip to Roanoke on Friday. Transportation is $3 for seniors and leaves the National Guard Armory, College and Depot streets, Friday, 8:30 a.m. Breakfast at the K&W and shopping at Tanglewood Mall.

A "mystery trip" is set for March 10. Transportation for seniors is $3 and leaves the armory at 9 a.m. Registration ends March 8.

RETIRED AND SENIOR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM, 1 Franklin St., Courthouse Annex, Christiansburg. Victoria Scott, 382-5775:

Today, the Christiansburg morning group visits Meadowbrook at 10 a.m. The afternoon group visits Heritage Hall at 2 p.m.

Thursday, 1:30 p.m., the Blacksburg group works on the SHARE mailing at New River Community Action.

Monday, noon, the Shawsville covered dish luncheon is at White Memorial Church, Shawsville. Volunteers and prospective volunteers are welcome.

Tuesday, 2 p.m., the Warm Hearth and McCoy groups visit Heritage Hall.

March 8, travel to the Tea Garden in Radford for lunch (on your own), then visit the Donkenny Outlet and the New River Valley Mall. Transportation is $2 and leaves the center at 11:45 a.m. (The Senior Center closes at noon on March 8.)

March 9, the beginning cross-stitch class meets at 10 a.m., and the broomstick afghan class meets at 1 p.m.

GILES COUNTY SENIOR CENTER, 1320 Wenonah Ave., Pearisburg. Betty Letsinger, 921-3924:

New Schedule: The swim therapy program meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 9:45 a.m., at the Blacksburg Aquatic Center.

The nutrition program is offered Thursdays, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

The Senior Advisory Board meets Tuesday, noon.

Legal Aid is available Tuesday, 2-4 p.m.

Free Income Tax Help: In Montgomery County, for county residents 60 or older, through April 13 by appointment Thursdays, 1-4 p.m., at the Christiansburg Senior Center, 655 Montgomery St. 382-8173. In Pulaski County, by appointment at the Pulaski Senior Center, 106 N. Washington Ave., Wednesdays, 1-2 p.m. Call 980-3969 or 980-1000, ext. 60. Bring copies of 1993 federal and state tax returns and forms for the 1994 tax year, including Form W-2 and other information relevant to 1994 income.

Veterans Administration: Tuesday, a representative visits the Radford Senior Center, 27 First St., 9 a.m.-noon, and the Christiansburg National Guard Armory, College and Depot streets, 1-3 p.m.
