Randall Bowling, 40, said he's looking forward to the work. "There's a lot of challenges in starting up a new organization," he said.
The authority will take control of the Mid-County Landfill and plans for a new regional recycling center beginning July 1. Some 20 county workers will be transferred to the authority. Montgomery, Christiansburg, Blacksburg and Virginia Tech formed the authority in December as part of a regional solution to disposing of trash.
Until July, Bowling still will work with Montgomery on several ongoing projects, including the new health and human services building and repairs to the county pool. The county Board of Supervisors is considering hiring a temporary engineer to supervise those projects, rather than replacing Bowling with a full-time county engineer now that so many landfill-related duties have been shifted to the authority.
Bowling, a Tazewell County native, joined the county government in 1989 after two years as a civilian employee with the Army in Alexandria and a decade before that in the coal industry in Bluefield. He holds a civil engineering degree from Virginia Tech.
