GARMENTS RECALLED; FABRIC FLAMMABLE

The Consumer Product Safety Commission and a North Carolina fabric maker Tuesday recalled more than 160,000 garments made of a fleece-type material that burns faster than newspaper and fails federal flammability standards, said commission spokeswoman Kathleen Begala.

The fabric was used in 45 clothing brands sold nationwide after May 1, 1994. Most were sweat shirts, hooded pullovers, casual shirts and other tops.

Macy's, Express Inc. (a division of The Limited), J.C. Penney, Capezio, Marianne, Stuart's and other retailers who sold the affected garments will post signs urging customers to return the items for a full refund.

Consumers also may contact the Consumer Product Safety Commission, toll-free, at (800) 638-2772.
