FOAM DEFECT FOUND IN SEVERAL BOAT TYPES

The Coast Guard warned the owners of four types of boats Tuesday that a defect may keep the boats from floating level after being swamped.

Tests of some of the boats showed insufficient foam in the boats, the agency said.

Such a defect normally would require a recall, but the Coast Guard said all four manufacturers have gone out of business. It urged owners to call its hot line to get information about how to check their boats and correct the defect if found. The hot line number is (800) 689-0816.

The boats involved are: American Boat160 Eagle; Cape Craft Ltd., 18-foot Cape Craft; Dixie Fiberglass Products SFT 14-foot Islander; Fantasy Boats Inc., F-13.
