MARTINSVILLE MAN DIES IN CRASH

A Martinsville man died Tuesday after his car was struck head-on by a tractor-trailer cab in Patrick County.

Mark Andrew Woods, 69, was pronounced dead several hours after being taken to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C., according to state police.

The crash occurred about 8:20 a.m., when a pickup truck traveling east on U.S. 58 stopped to make a left turn onto Virginia 854, police said. The truck had no brake lights or rear signals.

The tractor-trailer driver slammed on his brakes to avoid the truck and swerved into the westbound lane, hitting Woods.

Police said the pickup truck driver, whose name was not released, was charged with several traffic violations and leaving the scene of the accident.
