MAROONS BEAT EAGLES FOR REGION C SEMIFINAL BERTH

After building a big lead, George Wythe held off Auburn 78-70 on Tuesday in the Region C Tournament to earn a semifinal berth today against Parry McCluer.

Auburn cut a 56-29 deficit to 69-68 in the fourth quarter before Wythe's Jon Ervin hit 4-of-5 free throws in the final minutes to keep the Maroons (20-5) ahead.

Ervin and Aaron Andrews combined for 43 points. Andre Cook had 15 points while Skip Copenhaver added 11 points and five steals for George Wythe.

Jon Reed scored 21 points for Auburn (16-8) and Kenny Wojciechowski added 20. Reed and Wojciechowski each scored eight points in the third quarter when Auburn outscored Wythe 24-10.
