Chesapeake Bagel Bakery opened for business Wednesday at Old Country Plaza beside Tanglewood Mall on Starkey Road in Roanoke County. Alan Manstof and Michael Robinson, the company founders, attended the opening along with the local franchise owner, Bill Kirk .
The new bakery, owned by Fuel Oil and Equipment Co., is part of a franchise of a McLean-based national chain and is one of seven bakeries the Roanoke operators expect to open in Roanoke, Montgomery County and Lynchburg over the next few months.
The bakery will feature 12 to 15 varieties of bagels that are made from scratch and baked on the premises. Other items on the menu include bagel sandwiches, pizza bagels, soup, salads, desserts and gourmet coffee.
The second bakery is expected to open May 1 at Ridgeway Farms shopping center.

Three companies report earnings
Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Consolidated, Charlotte, N.C., parent of Coca-Cola Bottling Co. of Roanoke and operations in Clifton Forge, Dublin, Martinsville, Norton and Bristol, reported net income of $11.9 million, or $1.28 a share, on sales of $723.9 million in 1994, compared with year-earlier $14.8 million, or $1.60 a share, on sales of $686.9 million.
Interim Services, a Fort Lauderdale, Fla., provider of temporary personnel with franchised operations of its Interim Personnel and Interim Healthcare units in Roanoke, reported net income of $14.2 million, or $1.24 a share, on revenue of $634.4 million in 1994, compared with year-earlier $10.4 million, or $1.04 a share, on revenue of $515.0 million. For the fourth quarter, net income was $4.5 million, or 39 cents a share, on revenue of $184.7 million, compared with year-earlier $3.2 million, or 32 cents a share, on revenue of $141.9 million.
Shorewood Packaging Corp., New York maker of paperboard packaging with operations in Roanoke, reported net earnings of $5.5 million, or 28 cents a share, on sales of $85.7 million in its third quarter ended Jan. 28, compared with a year-earlier net loss of $3.3 million, equal to 18 cents a share, on sales of $52.4 million. For the nine months, net income was $17.8 million, or 93 cents a share, on sales of $267.5 million, compared with year-earlier $1.9 million, or 11 cents a share, on sales of $138.9 million.

S&S Paving Co. Inc. of Copper Hill in Floyd County has won a citation from the Virginia Department of Transportation for the quality of its performance on highway projects in the past year. The company was among 20 disadvantaged business enterprises commended by the department for work on construction and maintenance projects.
The Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce has extended until March 10 the deadline for nominations for its annual small-business awards. The chamber expects to cite a small-business person of the year as well as individuals in small companies engaged in manufacturing, construction, wholesale and retail trade, service and exporting.
