COMPANION BRIDGE WINS ENDORSEMENT

A proposed companion bridge to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel has won a key endorsement from environmental regulators.

The Virginia Marine Resources Commission, on a 5-1 vote Tuesday, approved the $250 million project that is designed to relieve traffic and increase safety on the bridge-tunnel.

Thd decision signaled the commission's belief that the 19.5-mile span from Virginia Beach to the Eastern Shore, to be built parallel to the existing bridge but without any tunnels, will not significantly harm the bay.
