A new support group for people who have problems with overspending has started in Salem.
Overspenders Anonymous is a 12-step group that meets Tuesdays at 8 p.m. at the Mount Regis Center, 405 Kimball Ave.

Service organization elects officers
Carol Campbell has been elected president of Delta Kappa Sorority of Epsilon Sigma Alpha.
Other officers elected recently were: Wanda English, vice president; Barbara Thomas, secretary; Elaine Prillaman, treasurer; Kathy Wilson, education director; and Linda Wyatt, parliamentarian.
Epsilon Sigma Alpha is a leadership/service organization of 1,200 chapters nationwide.
RAVE elects officers for 1995
The Roanoke Alliance for the Visually Enabled has selected Paul Hammock for its 1995 president.

MS group seeking volunteers, walkers
The National Multiple Sclerosis Society is seeking walkers and volunteers for an April 1 walkathon to be held in Roanoke.
Participants who raise $125 or more will be entered in a national drawing for a pair of round-trip tickets for two to Rome. Two sets of domestic round-trip tickets from TWA also will be awarded.
Money raised by walkers supports national research for a cure. MS is a chronic, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that affects young adults.

Student raising funds for Australian trip
Kristin Cawley, a 14-year-old student at William Byrd Middle School, has been asked to be a Virginia ambassador on a trip to Australia and New Zealand this summer through the People to People Student Ambassador Program.
However, Cawley, daughter of Vivian and Robert Cawley of 571 Shortbridge Lane, Hardy 24101, must raise $4,500 to fund her way.
As an ambassador, Cawley will make presentations to businesses and schools on what life is like in Virginia. Her report will consist of photographs and an essay about her family, school, neighbors and businesses in the area.
She will gather the same type of information on her trip for a report back to her school and community. Her schedule includes visits to Sydney, Canberra and Auckland as well as scuba diving off the Great Barrier Reef, attending the opera in Sydney and speaking at the Australian Parliament.
Roanoke Memorial needs volunteers
Roanoke Memorial Hospitals needs volunteers to answer phones, greet the public, deliver mail, flowers and balloons to patients, and do light clerical work.
Opportunities are available in many capacities and on flexible schedules. If you are interested in being an RMH volunteer call the Volunteer Office today at 981-7121.
The hospital's hospice also is looking for volunteers for home-visitation and other support services for terminally ill patients and their families. A training program for new volunteers will begin March 20.

The YWCA of Roanoke Valley has announced the names of new officers elected to serve for the 1995 year.
They are: Virginia "Ginny" Allison, president; Elizabeth "Ibby" Greer, president-elect; Gloria Reiske, vice president; Agness Henderson, treasurer; and Delores Y. Johns, secretary.
Hospice offering grief and loss support
The Grief and Loss Counseling Center has two support groups in operation at Good Samaritan Hospice. They are for anyone who has experienced a loss.
The first group meets on the first Tuesday of every month from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the hospice at 3825 Electric Road. The second group meets at Vinton Baptist Church the third Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m.

Counseling center now training volunteers
Trust, the Roanoke Valley Trouble Center Inc., is interviewing potential volunteers to help with its crisis telephone lines and one-to-one counseling services.
Volunteers are needed for Trust's 24-hour telephone counseling services, and to provide personal counseling to clients with problems in such areas as relationships, drug and alcohol abuse, sexual assault and spouse abuse.
An upcoming training session to be held March 17-19 and March 24-26 will be followed by on-the-job training, where the trainee will work with an experienced volunteer.
Volunteers work one 41/2-hour shift per week, following their initial training.

Area residents pass CPA exam
The State Board for Accountancy at the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation has announced the names of 15 Roanoke-area residents who passed the Uniform Certified Public Accountant examination in November.

Virginia has been included in the list of honor-roll states for the May examination. This status comes only when candidates taking the National CPA Examination pass in all subject areas at a rate higher than the national average. Only 16 states earned this designation.
Group celebrates 10th anniversary
The Alliance for the Mentally Ill-Roanoke Valley is celebrating its 10th anniversary March 13 at Hollins College's Ballator Gallery.
Agnes Hatfield, professor emeritus at the University of Maryland in the department of human development, will discuss ``Creating a Meaningful Life When There is Mental Illness,'' at the annual dinner. Hatfield is a founding member of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill.
A workshop titled "Working Collaboratively with Families" also will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Hollins Moody Center, with a reception following. The dinner meeting will begin in the gallery at 7.
Cost for the workshop only is $10; cost for dinner only is $15; and cost for the workshop and dinner is $20.

YWCA offering swim classes
The YWCA of Roanoke Valley is taking enrollments for swim classes for students of all ages and skill levels.
These Saturday classes will run from March 25 to May 20, except for Easter weekend, and will be available at the Central Center, 605 First St. in Roanoke, and the Salem Center, 1126 Kime Lane.
Classes available are: Water Babies/Tiny Tots, 9-9:30 a.m.; 5-year-olds, 9:30-10 a.m.; 6-year-olds, 10-10:30 a.m.; two novice/beginner classes for preteens, 10:30-11:15 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.-noon; novice/beginner adult, 8-8:45 a.m.; and intermediate adult/teen, noon-12:45 p.m.
Each eight-week session costs $35 for members and $40 for nonmembers. Early registration is recommended because each class has a maximum enrollment.

LOA needs volunteer counselors
The League of Older Americans Area Agency on Aging's Virginia Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Project is seeking volunteers for its health insurance counseling program.
Volunteers should not be a licensed insurance agent or investment counselor, want to help older consumers obtain answers to health insurance questions, enjoy complex tasks and want to learn more about health insurance coverage.
The volunteers are trained to provide answers about Medicaid and Medicare enrollment, insurance claims filing and decisions about Medigap and long-term care insurance. Volunteers answer questions from consumers in person or over the telephone.
The project is sponsored by the Virginia Department for the Aging and the State Corporation Commission Bureau of Insurance in cooperation with multiple agencies and organizations.
