AVERETT COLLEGE has announced the names of Roanoke Valley students who graduated in December.
Those from Roanoke are: Helen Jackson Lovern, bachelor of business administration, and Gary Wayne Kirby, bachelor of science in human resource development; both magna cum laude; Victoria Ann Ainsworth-Ray, James Franklin Armstrong, Joyce Hickman Hamm, Linda Sue Lawrence, Susan Renee Pollard and Robert Matthe Poole, all earning bachelor of business administration degrees; and Paul Douglass Beekman, Phillip Allan Bocchieri, Linwood Keith Brandis, Raymond Gilliam Cobb, Kevin John Delaney, Robert Elmore Evans and Jack Lee Wood, all earning masters of business administration degrees.
Bachelor of business administration graduates from Salem are: Brenda Louise Cole and Michael Anthony Gagnet.
Ralph Lewis Hayslett III of Troutville also earned a business administration degree.
HO THIEN NGUYEN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hong Duc Nguyen of Roanoke, has been named to the dean's list at Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, N.C.
Nguyen is a 1994 graduate of William Fleming High School.
JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY listed three Roanokers among the nearly 80 students named to ``Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.''
The students from Roanoke and their majors are: Erin Doyle, English; Jill M. McFadden, chemistry; and Ashley N. Thompson, premedical studies.
ROANOKE COLLEGE has awarded its Distinguished Service Award to Margaret "Peggy" Akers, a resource development assistant since 1982; Leah Russel, a Roanoke college graduate who has worked at Roanoke College since 1982 and has served as assistant dean and registrar since 1987; and Robert Shupe, a member of the colleges grounds crew since 1988.
The Distinguished Service Award was established six years ago by the college in order to recognize the outstanding accomplishments and distinguished service of staff members.
ROANOKE COLLEGE inducted seven students into the Virginia Delta Chapter of Alpha Chi, the national honor scholarship society, during the fall semester.
