BRINK'S PLANS BRANCH OFFICE IN SALEM

Brink's Inc., an operator of armored cars serving financial institutions and other businesses, said Thursday it will open a branch office in Salem, from which the company plans to serve Southwest Virginia.

Brink's, a company that was founded in 1859, will occupy 20,000 square feet of property owned by Jim Elliott at 1723 West Main St.

It will move into the property under a long-term lease early in the second quarter after extensive renovations are completed. The lease was negotiated by Jim Hodges and Ed Hall of Hall Associates Inc. in Roanoke.

Brink's currently serves the Roanoke Valley through its branch office in Lynchburg.

A.L. Peters, manager of the Lynchburg branch, said the Salem office initially will employ 15 people. He said some of them will move here from Lynchburg. But not knowing how many existing employees will accept the transfer, he said others will be hired locally.

Peters said the new office will allow for later shipping by customers in the Roanoke Valley and Southwest Virginia.

But the main purpose of the move will be to expand business in Southwest Virginia, Peters said. When this happens, he added, more employees will be hired.
