MAROONS LOSE 77-76 ON LATE FTS

Sammy Williams sank two free throws with four seconds left Thursday to give Maryville a 77-76 victory over Roanoke in an NCAA Division III tournament first-round men's basketball game.

The Scots (20-6) advance to a second-round matchup with Millsaps, a 79-67 winner over Hendrix.

The Maroons (19-9), who were making their 15th NCAA postseason appearance, had the ball and a 76-75 lead with less than 10 seconds remaining. Sophomore guard Jason Bishop drove to the basket and forced a shot in the lane as the 35-second clock wound down, but Williams came out and swatted away the ball. Bishop was whistled for a foul as he and Williams battled for the loose ball. Williams then sank both free throws for two of his team-high 21 points.

Roanoke had one more opportunity to score. The Maroons inbounded to Bishop, who raced up the court and passed to former Northside standout Nathan Hungate. Hungate launched a 25-foot 3-point shot that missed at the buzzer.

Bryant Lee scored 18 of his game-high 28 points in the second half for Roanoke. Lee was 8-for-10 from the field and 12-for-13 from the free-throw line.
