GREENBRIER GAMBLING BILL KILLED

A state House committee Thursday killed a bill to allow casino gambling at The Greenbrier resort because of a lack of support.

House Speaker Chuck Chambers, a Democrat, said the bill had 11 supporters out of 25 members of the committee. The number of supporters has fluctuated between 10 and 15, Chambers said.

``I think it's effectively dead,'' said Judiciary Chairman Rick Staton, also a Democrat. ``The clock got it. We didn't have time to work out the amendments.''

All bills must be through their houses of origin by Saturday. House bills had to be out of their committees and reported to the floor by Thursday to be read on three consecutive days as rules require.

Delegate Arnold Ryan, D-Summers, an outspoken opponent, declared victory in what he called ``round two.'' A bill that would have allowed 10 casino gambling licenses statewide was declared dead last week by Chambers, its sponsor.
