USDA funds formerly used for disaster payments have been reallocated to crop insurance.
A farmer who doesn't sign up for federal crop insurance in time won't be able to take advantage of any federal farm program, according to a warning issued recently by the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation.
The agency urges farmers who grow tobacco, corn, grain sorghum, wheat, small grains or soybeans to sign up. The fee for each crop grown in a county is $50 with a maximum payment of $200 per county and $600 overall for any one producer.
Local USDA offices can provide a list of crop insurance agents serving a farmer's locality.
