JOB GROWTH INDEX FALLS 5.7 PERCENT

A national measure of demand for workers fell a sharp 5.7 percent in January, a signal that last year's robust job growth is slowing.

The Conference Board, a New York business research organization, said Thursday its help-wanted advertising index fell 8 points to 131 in January, from 139 in December, but was up from 115 points in January 1994.

The index is based on the volume of help-wanted classified advertising in 51 major U.S. newspapers. Because ad volume is sensitive to labor market conditions, it is considered a valid gauge of the supply of jobs.
