PATRIOTS POWER PAST TECH 10-3

George Mason broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning and rolled to a 10-3 baseball win over Virginia Tech in Friday's opening game of the Baseball Challenge at Wilmington, N.C.

The Patriots (1-3) made the most of their 10 hits, but scored the winning run on a Tech fielding error and two wild pitches in the sixth. The Patriots added two runs in the seventh inning and four in the eighth.

Tech dropped to 2-1.

In Lakeland, Fla., Virginia tied a tournament record with a 14-under-par 274 to take a five-shot lead over Wake Forest and Florida Southern after the first round of the Imperial Lakes/Florida Southern Golf Classic. Virginia Tech is tied for ninth with Clemson at 288.

Brian Sharp and Sean Farrell shot 1-under par 71s for the Hokies while Curtis Deal and Robby Rasmussen each shot a 73.

Today's practice at Franklin County Speedway has been canceled because of inclement weather. Practice was rescheduled for noon-5 p.m. on March 11.
