UVA WOMEN TOP MD. IN ACC TOURNAMENT 68-46

Wendy Palmer scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds Friday as No. 6 Virginia opened its bid to complete a perfect Atlantic Coast Conference season with a 68-46 victory over Maryland in the women's basketball tournament.

The top-seeded Cavaliers (24-3) will meet Duke in today's opening game in the semifinals. The Blue Devils beat Clemson 78-71.

Center Jeffra Gausepohl also had 14 points as Virginia (24-3) took another step toward its quest for a sweep of the ACC regular season and tournament. The Cavaliers were the first ACC team in either men's or women's basketball to finish the regular season at 16-0.

Freshman Monick Foote contributed three first-half 3-pointers in a 17-4 run, finishing at 4-for-6 from 3-point range for 12 points.

The Cavaliers slammed the door shut on Maryland with a 12-2 run in the second half, capped by a Charleta Beale layup that put Virginia up 52-34.

Sonia Chase led Maryland (11-18) with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Kesha Camper added 10.

The game was delayed for about 10 minutes with 10 minutes, 14 seconds left in the second half when Virginia cheerleader Joanne Taneus hit the floor hard after a flip and was removed on a stretcher. ACC officials reported she suffered no significant injuries.

Trailing 22-19 with 5:43 left in the opening half, the Cavaliers got five points from Palmer in the last 4:38 and led 36-26 at halftime.

Maryland never got closer than 40-32 in the second half and trailed by double-digits most of the way.
