NAMES & CHANGES

Roanoke law firm names principals

NICHOLAS C. CONTE, KEVIN P. ODDO, E. DALE BURRUS and GEORGE J.A. CLEMO have been named principals of Woods Rogers & Hazlegrove, a Roanoke-based law firm.

Conte joined the firm in 1987 and practices banking law, corporate law, estate planning, intellectual property and tax law. Oddo joined the firm in 1987 and practices commercial and railroad litigation. Burrus has practiced medical malpractice litigation since joining the firm in 1987. Clemo joined Woods Rogers in 1988 and practices tax-exempt finance, conventional finance, international transactions and administrative law. He is coordinator of the firm's international practice group.

Also, three lawyers have joined the firm as associates:JAMES KENNETH COWAN JR., ELIZABETH L. NILES and LOUANN LEGNAIOLI BLACK, all members of the Roanoke, Virginia and American bar associations.

BUILDING SUPPLIES

JIMMY HUTTER has been appointed Roanoke contractor sales manager for Taylor Brothers in Lynchburg. Hutter has 25 years of experience in the building supply industry and has worked in the Roanoke area for 10 years.

CREDIT UNIONS

PAUL A. ECONOMY has been appointed vice president and branch manager of N&W Federal Credit Union's main office in Roanoke. Economy has eight years of operations and lending experience with the credit union. LAURISSA D. THOMPSON has been named promotions director for the credit union. She joined the operations department last year. ROBERT E. CANFIELD has been appointed director of security. Canfield recently retired as senior investigative special agent for the Roanoke office after 32 years of service.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

BENJAMIN P. JENKINS, president and chief operating officer of First Union Corp. of Virginia and First Union National Bank of Virginia in Roanoke, has been appointed to the board of directors of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce for a three-year term.

HEAVY EQUIPMENT

G. RON HARDIN has been named vice president of sales at Dominion Air & Machinery Co., an industrial distributor of air compressors and machine tools based in Roanoke. Hardin began his career with Smith-Courtney Co., a machine tool distributor in Greensboro, N.C., and after 16 years of service, joined Dominion Air & Machinery in 1989 as branch manager of its Greensboro operation. He will continue in that position in addition to performing his new sales management responsibilities.

HOSPITALITY

LYNNETTE HEIGES has been named sales manager at The Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center, where she has been a sales and marketing assistant for the past year. Prior to joining Doubletree Hotels Corp., which manages the facility, Heiges was a sales assistant with the Marriott Corp. in Scottsdale, Ariz. She has also worked as a production assistant for CBS Sports.

VICTOR HOWARD WILCOX has been named lessor of all food and beverage services at Bernard's Landing resort and conference center at Smith Mountain Lake. Wilcox was hired as chef at Bernard's Landing last fall. Later, negotiations began for him to take over the entire food service operation. He previously operated Jena's Restaurant in Vinton and has had a catering business in the Roanoke Valley for five years.

NONPROFITS

FRANK A. BOXLEY of Roanoke has been appointed to the board of trustees of Westminster-Canterbury, a retirement community in Lynchburg. Boxley is the president of Southwest Construction Inc.

Better Beginnings of the Roanoke Valley Inc. has announced its officers for 1995: DENEEN EVANS, Roanoke Adolescent Health Partnership, chairwoman; ANNE CARPENTER, ABC Adoption Services Inc., vice chairwoman; JANET McDOWELL, Planned Parenthood of the Blue Ridge, secretary; and KATHLEEN CARROLL, Blue Ridge Community Services, treasurer.

Bedford Habitat for Humanity Inc. recently has become incorporated and has elected officers: The Rev. C. EDWARD WEST, Saunders Grove Church of the Brethren, president; JOHN HENRY, a retired residential program director, vice president; BARBARA PLOTNER, Montvale Elementary School, secretary; and ELIZABETH MYERS, student at Central Virginia Community College, treasurer.

TINA HANNABASS of Roanoke has been promoted to advocacy coordinator for Arc Roanoke Inc., a charitable nonprofit corporation which provides employment and employment training for mentally retarded and mentally disabled persons in the Roanoke Valley. She formerly was the consumer support services manager for Arc.

TRANSPORTATION

KENNETH M. TAYLOR, vice president of W-L Construction & Paving Inc. in Chilhowie, has been elected secretary/treasurer of the Virginia Road and Transportation Builders Association. D. LARRY CARICO, vice president of Fort Chiswell Construction Corp. in Max Meadows, and W.C. GWALTNEY JR., vice president of marketing at W.W. Boxley Co. in Roanoke, have been elected new board members of the association.

RICHARD E. TOMLINSON, assistant treasurer-cash management for Norfolk Southern Corp., has retired after 42 years of service with the railroad. The Roanoke native began his career in 1952 as a clerk on the Norfolk and Western Shenandoah Division, predecessor of Norfolk Southern, and has held various positions in the treasury department, including credit manager and assistant treasurer-investments.
