Daniel Berthiaume turned aside 38 of 39 shots, and Jeff Jestadt scored twice in the third period to break open a tight game as the Roanoke Express notched its league-leading 18th road victory, 4-1 over the Johnstown Chiefs on Saturday night in the East Coast Hockey League.
Berthiaume extended his winning streak to seven games and has given up two or fewer goals in 10 of his 12 appearances for the Express. He improved his overall record to 16-2-2, 10-1-1 with the Express.
Craig Herr opened the scoring for Roanoke, one-timing a right-point pass from Dave Stewart over Chiefs goalie Neil Little at 1 minute, 15 seconds of the first period.
Marty Schriner extended the lead to 2-0, converting a Chris Potter rebound after Potter and Darwin McClelland kept the puck in play and pushed it out front for Schriner's snap shot over Little's glove. The Express has outscored Johnstown 10-0 in four first periods this season.
The Chiefs' Jason Brosseau cut the lead in half with a rebound behind Berthiaume late in the second period to send the game into the third with the Express on top 2-1.
Jestadt converted two two-on-one rushes in the third period, the first on a feed from Tony Szabo and the second set up by Ilya Dubkov.
With the victory, the Express (34-16-9) improves to the fourth-best record in the ECHL. Johnstown (25-29-5) fell for the third consecutive time at home.
ICE CHIPS: Jestadt extended his scoring streak to 12 games ... The Express returns to the Roanoke Civic Center on Tuesday to take on Greensboro.
