SEMONES RECEIVES ELITE HONOR

Brandon Semones, a sophomore linebacker for Virginia Tech, has been named a National Scholar Athlete Award winner by the American Honda Motor Company.

Semones, a former Glenvar High School standout, received his award at halftime of the UNC Charlotte-Virginia Tech basketball game on Saturday. The award is presented to student-athletes who have demonstrated talent, perseverance and dedication both on the football field and in the classroom.

Honda honors 10 student-athletes from Division I football schools each season and makes a $3,000 donation to each of the universities' general scholarship fund.

Semones, a sophomore who is majoring in accounting, was second on the team in tackles with 99 and had five quarterback sacks to go with eight other tackles for losses.

BASEBALL

Radford routs Akron 12-5

Former William Byrd standout Chris Carr went 4-for-4 with two home runs and six RBI to help Radford whip Akron 12-5 in the Highlanders' home opener.

Carr hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first to gave Radford (4-4) a 3-1 lead. Carr's added a two-run homer in the bottom of the third with Radford trailing 5-3. Three batters later, Kevin Saunders, another William Byrd product, hit a solo shot that gave Radford the lead. Former Northside star Kelly Dampeer added a solo homer in the eighth.

Jim Abbott (1-1) pitched six innings, allowing six hits and striking out five to earn the win. Akron pitcher Jim Bennedict (0-1) took the loss.

David Miller and Jason Ramsey combined on a seven-hitter as UNC Wilmington held on to beat Virginia Tech 3-1 in the Bojangles-Seahawk Baseball Challenge in Wilmington, N.C.

The Hokies (2-2) took a 1-0 lead when Bo Durkac singled home Mike Terhune in the first inning.

The Seahawks got to Tech starter Brian Fitzgerald in the fifth inning. Bryan Britt hit a homer to tie the game, and Paul Haynes and Tate Joyner hit back-to-back singles. Haynes scored on a fielder's choice by Marshall Cooper to give the Seahawks the lead. Terry Williams' homer in sixth inning provided the final Seahawk run.

Matt Ermigiotti threw five innings of two-hit baseball to help Washington and Lee win the first game of a doubleheader with West Virginia Tech 4-2. The Generals lost the second game 14-5.

In the first game, Owen Smith had two hits and two RBI, and Rob Boston threw two innings of no-hit relief to lift the Generals. In the second game, the Generals had a three-run lead, but starter Craig Fantuzzi gave up a grand slam to shortstop Joe Craffey.

In Greenville, S.C., Furman swept VMI 10-7 and 7-6. In the first game, Simon Gluckman hit a pinch-hit, three-run homer off VMI reliever Travis Bingler (0-1) in the bottom of the 11th inning to snap a 7-7 tie. In the nightcap, Furman's Brian Walsh broke a 4-4 tie in the sixth with a solo home run, and the Paladins hung on for the win. Joey Schenek (1-1) took the loss.

Maroons roll to lacrosse victory

Chris Young scored four goals to lead Roanoke to an 18-6 Old Dominion Athletic Conference lacrosse win over Virginia Wesleyan in the conference opener for both teams.

The Maroons (2-0 overall, 1-0 ODAC) also got three goals and three assists from Jeff Jones and J.J. Blatt added three goals and two assists. Roanoke outshot Virginia Wesleyan (0-1, 0-1) 63-23.

John Ripley scored five goals and Rusty Parrino added four more as VMI ran away from Virginia Tech 23-13 in a non-conference lacrosse game in Lexington. Parrino added four assists and Gary Mryncza also had four assists to pace the Keydets. Virginia Tech was led by Adam Randall, who scored four goals and had three assists.

Junior midfielder Duncan Slidell scored a goal 1 minute, 11 seconds into overtime to lift Washington and Lee past Hampden-Sydney 7-6 in the ODAC lacrosse opener for both schools.

The Generals (2-0, 1-0), who avenged their only conference loss from last year, were led by Jason Hurst, who scored two goals and Andy Dutton, who had two assists. The Tigers fell to 0-2 and 0-1.

Virginia used five goals from Doug Knight to blow past 11th-ranked Navy 24-13 in the Cavaliers' lacrosse season-opener in Charlottesville.

The Cavaliers (1-0) bolted out to a 4-0 lead before Navy (2-1) closed it to one in the first period. Virginia then used a seven-goal run to pull away in the second half.

VMI placed seven wrestlers in today's championship finals to take a six-point lead after the first day of competition at the Southern Conference Wrestling Championships in Asheville, N.C.

The Keydets finished with 80.5 points, just ahead of Appalachian State with 74.5 points and third-place UT-Chattanooga with 72.5 points. Appalachian State and UTC each placed six wrestlers in today's championship finals.

The consolation finals begin today at 9 a.m. and the championship finals start at 11 a.m.

Jimmy Flippen fired a 67 for the second straight day to help Virginia take a five-stroke lead over host Florida Southern at the Imperial Lakes/Florida Southern Golf Classic in Lakeland, Fla.

Flippen leads the medalist race with a two-round total of 134. Virginia Tech is 13th in the team competition with a two-round total of 581, which is 26 strokes behind Virginia at 555.

Meredith Newby, a junior from Virginia Tech finished eighth in the women's 20-pound weight throw at the 1995 Mobil Indoor Championships held at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.

Newby, who was the Metro Conference indoor champion in the weight throw, launched the weight 51 feet, 2 inches, breaking her school record for the third time this season. The event was won by Sonya Fitts of the New York Athletic Club, whose winning throw was 62 feet, 7 inches.
