DEMONS FALL TO GATE CITY IN REGION IV

Shannon Carter scored 26 points and Jason Haynes added 22 as Gate City won the Region IV boys' championship with a 63-44 victory over Christiansburg on Saturday night.

The Blue Devils won their second regional championship in three years. Gate City (22-2) took a 20-11 lead through the first period and polished off Christiansburg (21-5) with a 17-4 run in the fourth quarter.

Darrell Calloway led the Blue Demons with nine points.

Both teams advance to next week's Group AA tournament. Christiansburg will meet Northside, and Gate City will face Liberty.

MERACS

Gateway Christian 75, Mount Carmel 70, 2OT: In Hagerstown, Md., the Crusaders won the consolation bracket of the Mid-East Regional of American Christian Schools by beating Mount Carmel in double overtime at Broadfording Christian Academy.

Jay Perfater and Scott Perfater each hit two free throws in the second overtime as Gateway Christian outscored Mount Carmel 8-3 in that extra period.

Gateway, which finished its season 14-6, led by seven points in the fourth quarter, but Mount Carmel (19-6), a school from Luray, rallied to tie it on Kevin Good's jumper with six seconds left in regulation. Both teams scored six points in the first overtime period.

Aaron Meadows led Gateway with 24 points, Ryan Gordan had 18 and Jay Perfater and Monty Pence scored 12 each. Pence was named to the all-tournament squad.

Chris Stoneberger led Mount Carmel with 24 points.
