WHERE THE NEW JOBS ARE

They're not all in town, as tax-strapped rural localities step up their efforts to attract tax-rich economic development.

Between 1990 and 1994, the number of jobs in the New River Valley declined, primarily due to the closing of AT&T in Pulaski and lay-offs at the GM-Volvo plant. But employment rolls in the Roanoke Valley, and the three big rural counties within commuting distance - Botetourt, Bedford and Franklin - increased by 6,000.

Where were those new jobs?

60% in Roanoke, Salem and Roanoke County. (3,629 additional jobs)

40% in Botetourt, Bedford and Franklin counties. (2,389 additional jobs)
