AKERS, Evia Sutphin, 88, of Roanoke, died Monday, March 6, 1995. Arrangements by John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem.

ALBERT, Nellie Kate Cassell, (Mrs. Hart), 97, of McCoy, died Sunday, March 5, 1995 at the home of her daughter. Mrs. Albert was born in Patrick County, Va. on March 14, 1897, a daughter of the late Austin Minter and Leanna Rosabell Cruise Cassell. Her earliest memory was moving from Patrick County, in 1902, by covered wagon, to Radford, which was a two day trip. She was preceded in death by her husband, R. Hart Albert Sr. Survivors include two daughters and a son- in-law, Virginia A. (Mrs. Garfield) Hamblin, Fairlawn and Hallie A. and Ross Brown, Blacksburg; one son and daughter-in-law, R. H. Jr. and Linda C. Albert, McCoy; seven granddaughters; one grandson; two great-granddaughters; seven great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 8, 1995, at Community Christian Church, with Mr. Bobby E. Fuller officiating. Interment will follow in the McCoy Cemetery. BROCKETT, Claude Leary Jr., 77, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, March 5, 1995. Mr. Brockett was a Navy veteran of Worl d War II, having served in the European Theatre, was a charter member of Beaumont Masonic Lodge in Spartanburg, S.C. and was retired from Electrical Sales, having worked for Noland Co. and Williams Supply. Surviving are his wife, Mozelle P. Brockett; a daughter and son-in-law, Nicki M. and William F. Wilson, Spartanburg, S.C.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert E. and Cathy Falligant, Lodi, Calif.; Michael K. and Christy Falligant, Birmingham, Ala.; his grandchildren, William C. Wilson and his wife, Michelle, Dr. Michael B. Wilson, Travis Jake and Rachel Falligant, John Michael Falligant; three sisters, Nina Forbes, Henrietta Sanders, both of Elizabeth City, N.C., Clara Gibbs, Hertford, N.C. CLAYTOR, Alexander B., (``Broadden""), 84, of Lexington, passed away in a Lexington hospital on Sunday, March 5, 1995. A member of a very large and prominent family of Claytors, he was the oldest survivor of the descendents of William and Judith Claytor, the first generation removed from slavery. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Solon Claytor and a native of Floyd County. He received his early education in the Floyd County, Botetourt County and Roanoke City School Systems. Furthering his education he attended Virginia State Normal School (Virginia State University) and Tennessee State University. The owner of a 310 acre farm in Rockbridge County, he raised hogs and cattle for more than 20 years. He also served the area as insurance agent, and as a funeral director. He was married to Miss Christine Williams, the daughter of one of Roanoke's pioneer funeral directors, C.C. Williams, for whom the C.C. Williams Memorial Burial Park is named. 15 years ago he honored his wife and his father with the ""Christine and Solon Claytor'' Scholarship Fund at Washington & Lee University. Survivors include his foster sister, Mrs. Johnnella Carlton Walker, Stockton, Calif., and a host of cousins in the Roanoke, New River Valley and Floyd County areas including Dr. John (Ruth) Claytor, Dr. Walter (Kim) Claytor, Mrs. Irene Greene, Mrs. Dorothy (Marshall) Curtis, Mr. Howard (Emma) Hopkins, Mrs. Elsie White and others in Roanoke, Rexford Hopkins, Rocky Mount, Edgar and Roy Claytor, Radford; a host of other cousins around the Country; and many generations of second and third cousins, including a favorite, Dr. Conrad Claytor, Roanoke. Family headquarters are at the home of a favorite cousin and confidante, James (Redd) Charlton and Evelyn, 3318 Kershaw Rd., N.W., Roanoke, Va. HIGGINBOTHAM, Anna Bishop, 93, of Roanoke and formerly of Galax, died Sunday, March 6, 1995, in a local nursing home. She was the widow of William W. Higginbotham and a retired school teacher. Surviving are a brother, Warren G. Bishop M.D., Medford, Ore.; nephews, William R. Bishop, Chattanooga, Tenn., James T. Bishop M.D., Holland, Mich., William R. Bishop, Las Vegas, Nev.; and nieces, Jeanneta B. Patane, Roanoke, Billie W. Taylor, Oxford, Mich. HIPPERT, Dorothy Virginia, 85, of Roanoke, died Monday, March 6, 1995, after an extended illness. Mrs. Hippert was a native of Roanoke and she graduated from the Roanoke Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1931. She was retired from the nursing staff of the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Salem, Va. after a distinguished nursing career. She is survived by her husband, Richard Owen Hippert Sr.; son and daughter-in-law, Richard O. Hippert Jr. and Georgiana Moorman Hippert of Raleigh, N.C.; sister, Katherine Mullen of Salem, Va.; three grandchildren and spouses, Kimberly and John Barfield of Raleigh, N.C., Steven and Cindy Hippert of Greensboro, N.C. and Gregory Dean Hippert of Charlotte, N.C.; four great-grandchildren, Ashley and Will Barfield of Raleigh, N.C. and Westley and Taylor Hippert of Greensboro, N.C. HUFFMAN, Lillie Seay O'Connell Painter, 89, of Buena Vista, died Sunday, March 5, 1995, at Stonewall Jackson Extended Care Facility. Born in Buena Vista on January 29, 1906, she was the daughter of the late John J. Seay and Georgianna Coffey Seay. She was a member of St. Johns United Methodist Church and had worked at Burlington Industries. S he was preceded in death by three husbands, Stuart O'Connell Sr., Robert Painter, and Francis Huffman; a son, Everette O'Connell; two brothers; three sisters. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Stuart Jr. and Betty O'Connell, Buena Vista; a grandson and wife, Stuart G. and Kelly O'Connell, Charlotte, N.C.; a great-granddaughter, Caitlin O'Connell, Charlotte, N.C.; a sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Harry Covington, Cumberland; two stepsons, Herman Huffman, Glasgow, Danny Huffman, Baltimore, Md.; a stepdaughter, Nancy Flint, W.Va.; numerous nieces and nephews. KEITH, Sarah Brown, 75, of Salem, died Monday, March 6, 1995 in a local hospital. She was the widow of Clarence M. Keith and was predeceased by her daughter, Robin Keith Ford, both of Chattanooga. Mrs. Keith was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where she served on two missions in the Philippines and West Virginia and was active in genealogy work in the Family History Library. She was retired from the Chattanooga Diagnostic Clinic where she served as a LPN. Born on August 25, 1919 in St. Clair County, Ala., Mr s. Keith is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Floyd and Gayle Keith of Roanoke; and a daughter and son-in-law, Ede and Tom White of Murfreesboro, Tenn. She is also survived by brothers, Hoyt Brown and Floyd Brown; sisters, Pauline (Mrs. Bud) Thompson and Sue (Mrs. A. L.) Smith, all of Ala.; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Stake Center, Salem, with graveside services and interment on Saturday morning at the Liberty Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Adamsburg, Ala. LAURIDSEN, Einer George, 93, of Marion, died Sunday, March 5, 1995 in Francis Marion Manor Nursing Home. He is survived by his wife, Jenny Lauridsen of Marion, Va.; one daughter and son-in-law, Georgia and James Burnette of St. Louis, Missouri; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Pat Lauridsen of Menlo Park, Calif.; one sister, Silvia Kercher of Mishawaka, Indiana; one brother, Victor Lauridsen of Sun City, Fla.; three grandchildren, James Burnette, Julie Burnette, both of St. Louis, Missouri and Adam Lauridsen of Menlo Park, Calif. NELSON, James Albert, 68, of Boones Mill, passed away Friday, March 3, 1995. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 8, 1995, Hamlar-Curtis Chapel with the Rev. E.T. Burton officiating. OBENSHAIN, Annie Ida, 88, died Sunday, March 5, 1995, in Lewis-Gale Hospital following a short illness. Miss Obenshain was a well-known teacher for years in the Athens, Ga., school system before retiring to her family home at Mill Creek in Botetourt County where she remained active in the church and community. She graduated from Radford College and obtained her master's degree in education from Peabody College in Nashville, Tenn. She first taught in the Pulaski County Schools following college. During World War II, she worked at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant. She moved to Athens, Ga., where she taught in the Demonstration School at the University of Georgia and then in the public school system there for over 25 years. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the honorary teaching sorority. She returned to Virginia in the 1970's and was active in the Fincastle Historical Society, the Republican Women of Botetourt County, the Blue Ridge Forum, and Mill Creek Baptist Church. Surviving are her sister and brother-in-law, Blanche and William R. Garland of Fincastle; her brother, Samuel S. Obenshain of Blacksburg; her cousin, Mary Obenshain of Salem; three nephews, David S. Garland of Fincastle, S. Scott Obenshain of Albuquerque, N. Mex., and Joseph B. Obenshain of Roanoke; three nieces, Elizabeth Allison of Roanoke, Sally Crooker of Wappingers Falls, N.Y., and Elizabeth Obenshain of Blacksburg; 9 great-nephews; 9 great-nieces; and 3 great-great-nieces and nephews. The funeral will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Mill Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Marsha Davidson, associate pastor, assisted by Dr. Harry K. Gamble. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. in Rader Funeral Home in Troutville. RADFORD, George A., 73, of Beacon, N.Y., formerly of Floyd, Va., died Sunday, March 5, 1995, at Castle Point Veteran Hospital, Castle Point, N.Y., after a lengthy illness. He was born in Floyd, Va. March 28, 1921, the son of Luther Lee Radford and Addie Smith Radford. He married Frances Folkes October 7, 1944 at St. Joachim's Church. He was a employee of Carpenter A&G Builders, Poughkeepsie, N.Y. He was a member of American Legion Post 203, Beacon N.Y., Veterans of Foreign W ars Post 666, Beacon, N.Y. He served in the U.S. Army October 14, 1942 to February 12, 1946. He is preceded in death by two brothers, Fleetwood and Percy Radford; and a sister, Eva Vest. Surviving are his wife, Frances Radford, Beacon, N.Y.; daughters, Darlene Cronk, Fishkill, N.Y., Nora Anderson, Seattle, Wash.; son, Dennis Radford, Beacon, N.Y.; brothers, Clyde Radford, Copper Hill, Horace Radford, Roanoke; sisters, Evelyn Furrow, Callaway, Dorothy Brogan, Roanoke, Myrtle Underwood, Callaway. He is also survived by several nieces; nephews; great nieces and nephews; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. SHULTZ, Florrie Storey, 87, of Danville, died Monday morning, March 6, 1995 in Danville Regional Medical Center, after a short illness. She was born July 9, 1907 in Lynchburg, the daughter of Herman and Mattie Shultz. Miss Shultz worked for Danville & Western Railroad from 1942 to 1951 and worked for Dan River Mills from 1951 until she retired. She was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church. She is predeceased by one sister, Mary Kathryn Shultz. Miss Shultz is survived by two cousins, Mrs. Bernadette K. Kyle of Lunchburg, and Mrs. Rachael Cox of Ridgeway. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. from Mount Vernon United Methodist Church by the Rev. John LeGault Jr. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church. SMITH, Horace A., 72, of Salem, died Monday, March 6, 1995, in a Salem hospital. He was a World War II Veteran. He was a member of the Irons Workers Local #697. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie McNeil Smith; two daughters and sons-in-law, Vickie and Billy Carder, Salem, Susan and Silas Kingery, Roanoke; sons and daughter-in-law, Ron and Lee Garrison Smith, Charlotte, N.C., Tim Smith, Salem; three brothers, Paul D. Smith, Salem, James B. Smith, Baltimore, Md., Maynard H. Smith, Laurel Hill, N.C.; one sister, Anna Sires, Rockingham, N.C.; halfsister, Betty Mabes, North Carolina; two halfbrothers, Joe Smith, Roanoke, Bobby Smith, North Carolina; two granddaughters, Samantha Carder and Bailey Carder; grandson, Jacob Kingery. SPRAKER, Robert Hugh, 100, of Wytheville, died Sunday, March 5, 1995, in the Wythe County Community Hospital. He was born September 25, 1894, near Cripple Creek the son of the Jackson and Lucy Williams Spraker. He was the last veteran of World War I living in Wythe County and a retired farmer. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Esther Johnson Spraker, three sisters and four brothers. He is survived by: one daughter and son-in-law, Marie and Ernest Groseclose, Wytheville; three sons and daughters-in-law, Lester and Ruth Spraker, Roy Dean and Shelby Jean Spraker, all of Wytheville, Dallas and Beulah Spraker, Max Meadows; eight g randchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 8, 1995, in the Calvary United Methodist Church with the Rev. Carrico officiation. The body will be placed in the church one-hour before service time. Interment will follow in the Davis Cemetery with the American Legion Post #9 performing Military Rites. SUTPHIN, Paul Reece, 84, of Christiansburg, formerly of Floyd, departed this life Sunday, March 5, 1995, at Heritage Hall, Blacksburg. He was born in Floyd County on October 5, 1910, a son of Osborne and Belle Sutphin. Mr. Sutphin spent most of his life in Law Enforcement, working for the Department of Corrections and serving Floyd Co. as Sheriff, from 1960 until 1972. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Pugh Sutphin, and by their son, Paul Rudolph Sutphin. He leaves behind a son and daughter-in-law, James R. and Tula Sutphin, Ijamsville, Md.; one daughter and son-in-law, Betty S. Thomas and Dr. Richard M. Yearwood, Christiansburg; one grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Paul Randall and Kathy Sutphin, Jerusalem; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Ruby S. and Fred Altizer, Christiansburg, Evia S . Akers, Roanoke. Funeral services will be Thursday, March 9, 1995, at 11 a.m. in the Gardner Funeral Home, with Mr. Larry Phillips officiating. THORNTON, Charles Easy, of Roanoke County, formerly of Springfield, Ill., passed away Thursday, March 2, 1995. The Lord is my Shepherd: Psalm 23. He is survived by his wife, Simone Thornton; his children, Gloria E. Flesch, Jean-Luc Thornton, Christine G. Vest, Roberta L. VIRTS, Clanna L., 89, of Chambersburg, Penn., died Sunday, March 5, 1995 at Menno Haven Nursing Home. Mrs. Virts was born at Prices Fork, Va. on December 22, 1905, a daughter of the late Dewey Bachman and Lottie Mae Long Price. She was also preceded in death by two husbands and one sister. She attended V.P.I & SU, was active in the Franklin County Democratic Party, Counter at the Election Polls in Guilford, Twp. for many years, and a member of Central Presbyterian Church in Chambersburg, Penn. Survivors include a daughter, Lois L. (Mrs. Richard) Bartl, Alexandria; two sons, Carroll Lawrence Broomall, Penn. and Robert Lawrence, Lancaster, Calif.; one sister, Frieda Clemens, Blacksburg; two brothers, Basil Price, Conway, S.C. and J. She was preceded in death by her sons, Robert Felix Williams and Michael Douglas Williams and she is survived by her daughter, Janice L. WRAY, Robert Lee, 61, of Baltimore, Md., died Monday, March 6, 1995, in Roanoke. He was a retired employee of the Civil Service Department. Surviving are two sisters, Ann M. Wray, Edna L. Wray, both of Roanoke. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's South Chapel, 2 p.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. J. Landon Maddex officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Oakey's South Chapel.
