Sculpture competition

Radford University Galleries will be hosting its annual Sculpture Purchase Competition. The college is seeking work that functions as public seating, but other works will be considered.

An honorarium will be paid to the 10 artists whose works are selected. The purchase prize is worth $7,500. Installation of each work in the outdoor courtyard is the responsibility of the artist.

Biodynamics workshop

Those interested in learning about biodynamics can attend a workshop on April 29 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at The Josephine Porter Institute for Applied Bio-dynamics in Woolwine.

Biodynamic agriculture utilizes herbal preparations, manure and silica to fertilize and improve the health of soil and plants.

The $20 registration fee includes a full day of scheduled activities in small group settings, morning refreshments and lunch.

Poetry contest

Sparrowgrass Poetry Forum is offering a grand prize of $500 in its new Distinguished Poet Awards contest. Thirty-four other cash prizes will also be awarded.

Poets may enter one poem only, 20 lines or less, on any subject, in any style. Poems entered will also be considered for publication in ``Treasured Poems of America'', a hardcover anthology.

Arts and crafts show

Applications are being accepted for the Juried Arts and Crafts Show of the 47th annual Virginia Highlands Festival, to be held July 29-Aug. 13 in Abingdon.

Artists must be 18 or older, and all work must be original and executed by the entrant. Paintings, watercolors, pen-and-ink drawings, etchings, photography, clay, metal work, fibers, leather, glass, paper, wood and other works are eligible.

The festival will award $850 in cash prizes for the show.

Auction at museum

The Science Museum of Western Virginia will celebrate its 25th anniversary on the 25th of March with a live auction, featuring $25,000 worth of merchandise and gift certificates.

Items to be auctioned off include a Kenyan Safari, round-trip airfare anywhere in the United States, a weekend for two at the Hotel Roanoke, a laptop computer, gift certificates from area restaurants, jewelry, original art work, and furniture from Twist & Turns.

The evening's events will include a V magazine fashion show, cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, live music and a silent auction.

Event for author

``An Evening With Joyce Carol Oates'' will be held March 30 at 7:30 p.m. in Lynchburg College's Memorial Ballroom in the Hall Campus Center.

Oates has been nominated twice for the Nobel Prize in literature and won the National Book Award for her novel, ``Them.''
