COLLEGIANS' CHOICE: CHARLIE'S 5-CHEESE PIZZA

They came, they ate, they voted. Now local college officials no longer have to guess what their students want to eat. At a Feb. 14 food fair held in Roanoke College's Commons area, students, faculty and staff from that school joined peers from Virginia Tech, Radford University, Washington & Lee University and Hollins, Sweet Briar, Ferrum and Lynchburg colleges in sampling and opining on 225 items from 45 vendors.

Roanoke College publicist Teresa Thomas said that of 671 ballots distributed, 390, or 58 percent, were returned. The winners, forks down, were Little Charlie's 5-Cheese Delightful Pocket Pizza, closely followed by Keebler's Vegetarian Chili. Also popular were Rudi's Baguette Bread, Delta Pride's Breaded Carolina Catfish Strips and Crystal Light Raspberry Ice Drink. Thomas said the pizza and chili are already being offered. The other favorites are expected to be in house by semester's end.

Since the discovery of flame, cooks have pondered what diners might want to eat. If all else fails, ask them. Now there's a lesson well-learned.
